Between 2017 and 2021, Urban Education Live (UEL) created and tested models of collaboration between universities and urban communities. Through this action-research, universities acted as catalysts of urban change through trans-educational urban capacity building. Both local communities and the learning process of students benefited from this collaboration model. Drawing on earlier lessons learned, UEL developed a set of innovative approaches for inclusive, vibrant and accessible urban communities.

The result is a common set of references and standards that helps the interactions between the partners.
WP 2 Bucharest: Initiating and Goals:Social Mapping and Initial Local Hubs – focuses on social mapping as local outreach and establishing a baseline, building up a local agenda with goals and indicators. The goals both serve to determine what to do but also where to do it – establishing local Hubs in various ways.
WP 3 Sheffield: Operating and Evaluating – has a focus on the operation of the Hubs and how to evaluate the impact of the activities by using the indicators to map the progress of the project. It also works on how to keep the impact of the UEL sustainable after the hub has moved to a new location by developing urban capacity and new networks.
WP 4 Tampere: Documentation and Dissemination – is focused on the documentation and dissemination of the results of the UEL project. This includes setting up a website and a digital map that continually draws on and adds to a dynamic and site specific archive (see description in 10.2). In addition to this, WP 4 will present a broad collaboration of innovative companies and cities. LJUBLJANA: THE NEW ROLE OF THE UNIVERSITY AS AN INDEPENDENT BROKER, CURATOR AND CATALYST
By embedding and engaging the university locally it is possible to combine the very local and place-based approach of UEL with building or tapping into existing networks in order to scale up and strengthen local urban innovation.
BUCHAREST: SOCIAL MAPPING: DISCOVERING LOCAL PATTERNS AND DOCUMENTING AND CATALYZING CHANGE
Social Mapping is a continuous process that, more than just collecting stories and data, it will enhance the concrete local presence and engage people. The project aims at a dynamic and hybrid mapping that combines qualitative, quantitative and spatial data over time to show both emerging patterns and urban change.
SHEFFIELD: THE LOCAL HUB FOR LEARNING AND DOING: PLACE AS A CROSS-CONNECTOR
In the UEL project, a local hub can be an underused building or a shop with space for both university and local activities. Hubs allow for the fundamental urban dynamic of the unplanned encounter. People can take part in their activities with different levels of commitment and local presence allows for spontaneous and improvised situations to happen, giving students a chance not only to study the dynamics of the city but also be an active part of it.
TAMPERE: URBAN CAPACITY BUILDING: NEW TYPES OF EMPOWERMENT, A TRANS-EDUCATIONAL APPROACH
The trans-educational urban capacity building is the collaboration between higher educational institutions, local primary schools and other types of educational institutions such as vocational schools.
